Department of English   Spoken English Classes Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science has a student body comprising of students haling from a background of twelve years of instruction in Tamil. It has been observed that many students have reached the college level with a built in fear and in some cases a visible aversion for the English language. For aspiring students in any field efficient and effective communication has become the try word for success. It is non mandatory that a knowledge of spoken English and the ability to communicate well is taken seriously as an important tool not only the widening of horizons but also in climbing up the ladder. The Objectives of the spoken English classes in the campus is to primarily remove the fear and to enable the students to converse effectively by developing in them the ability to understand and reciprocate in English. Students are made aware of the common forms that are to be filled in daily life and are taught the correct method of filling them. The importance and the correct way of reading a newspaper is also taught. A basic awareness on how to conduct oneself at an interview is given. Arts and Crafts Exhibition In an effort to manifest and encourage the latent artistic talent of the students, an Arts and Crafts Exhibition is conducted once in two years. The exhibition is open to participation for students of all the three sister concerns under the trust. The over whelming response and bubbling zeal with which the students participated was amazing and their work truly brought to life the words of the quote "A thing of beauty is a joy forever "   Spell board /Calligraphic Display/Debate A spelling contest and a handwriting competition is conducted in order to direct the students attention towards the importance of these two basics.   Department of Mathematics   Bridge course in mathematics     The department of mathematics offers a bridge course in mathematics for the students of 1st year UG who did not study mathematics in higher secondary level. Coaching classes will be conducted for the non-mathematics students and the students who are weak in mathematics subjects. The non-mathematics students were given coaching by our mathematics department staff on the following topics. Arithmetic skills Logical and reasoning Algebra and calculus fundamentals Basic mathematics Statistics Matrices   Set theory Interest and business calculations Numerical methods Calculator tricks and tips Matrix operations Probability The course was proved to be very useful to bring up the standard of the students in mathematical knowledge up to the level required at this stage.   Department of Management   Industrial training Industrial training is a must for every student where he/she works in a firm for a period of not less than 30 days in the 3 years of his/her college life. This is for gaining practical knowledge.   Department of Commerce With the aim of enhancing the knowledge and skill of the students the Department of Commerce conducts number of Seminars, Guest Lectures, Workshop, Paper Presentation, Debate, Quiz Programme etc from time to time. In this year so far we have conducted nearly 8 to 10 Lecture on Self Development series by inviting Eminent speakers from various fields. The speakers have created strong confidence in the minds of our students, so as to face any situation and to show their talents and skills. In addition this Department has arranged many subject related Seminars, Workshops in the areas of Finance, Management, Marketing, Auditing, Taxation, Corporate side etc. Recently the Department of Commerce has organized an One Day National Level Seminar on "Commerce in the Competitive Market for HR". In this Mega Event many Resource Persons and Eminent Personalities were called upon to present their views; nearly hundred and fifty outside participants from various colleges and universities took part in the seminar and they presented nearly ninety five papers. To bring out the talents and potentialities of students the Department is conducting special programmes like Debates, Paper Presentations, Quiz programmes etc. We are proud to note here that we have arranged all these programmes in the odd and even semester respectively. In addition, we are taking full time effort for making our students fit for this competitive edge.   Department of Biochemistry During the last quarter of the century enormous developments have taken place in various aspects of Biological sciences. The pace of new developments is so high that biological students often find it very difficult to keep themselves updated. With the aim of enhancing the knowledge and skill of the student periodical organization of Seminars / Guest Lectures etc in the department provides a foram. Department of Biochemistry has conducted many lectures in the field of Genomes, Nutrition, Invitro Fertilization Techniques, Research Methodology etc., by making arrangements with eminent personalities in the respective fields. Besides the young students get a chance to meet many brawny scientists and learn from them. Recently the Department of Biochemistry has organized a 2 day State Level Seminar on "The Changing Role of Bioscience and Medicinal Plants". In this, many eminent resource persons were called upon and they discussed their views with the students and faculties which was a very informative and beneficial programme for the students community. To bring out the hidden talents of the students the department had also conducted a Blood Group Identification Camp – BIOMIA, Science quiz, Students Seminar etc. All these efforts are being taken to make an awareness in the field of life science for students who would be the best future Biotechnologists / Biologist.
